Niko Pirosmani was born in Mirzaani and spent much of his life in Tbilisi, working as a sign painter, railway worker, dairy vendor, and itinerant artist. Largely self-taught, he developed a direct visual language of flat forms, dark grounds, and bold outlines.
His paintings of feasts, animals, shop signs, actors, and tavern patrons became central to Georgian modern art after his death. Pirosmani is now treated as one of Georgia's defining artists and an original voice in European primitivism.
