Biography
Gigo Gabashvili studied in Tbilisi, Saint Petersburg, and Munich, bringing academic realism into Georgian painting at the turn of the twentieth century. His portraits, ethnographic scenes, and travel subjects made him one of the first Georgian artists to build a sustained professional studio career.
Gabashvili's scenes of Khevsurs, marketplaces, and Central Asian journeys helped define a visual record of the Caucasus and neighboring regions before the Soviet period.
